​The cities, towns, and villages that people have abandoned hold a certain fascination for those who visit them. Their remnants, surviving in a state of arrested decay,  evoke the  ghosts of our past, allowing us to imagine being there, sharing the existence of previous generations and learning what pressures and disappointments led them to desert communities that were once their home.
A closer look at the places their inhabitants have forsaken, and at their reasons for doing so,  suggests which kinds of towns and communities people may flee in the future and the directions in which they are most likely to head.
