Homeless in America
Many of us witness, in the corner of our minds and eyes, homeless people living on the street--fellow humans who endure hardships greater than most of us have ever known. Encountering them, we tend to avert out gaze, quicken our pace, or give them a wide berth--reducing them to the status of lampposts or fire hydrants, incapable of evoking our guilty discomfort. Homeless in America asks what forces drive a person to homelessness, finding that a frequent cause lies in emotional or mental damage, often experienced early in life. It further examines the challenges the homeless must face--from the burdens of daily existence (e.g., finding a place to sleep, or even a bathroom) to the humiliating contempt that they nearly always endure. Finally, the film considers what, absent a major shift in our economic and political priorities, can be done mitigate the predicament of those driven into homelessness.
