Death is our only existential certainty, one many of us think about but few like to discuss. Departing examines our choices when facing the end of life, our expectations (if any) about a possible afterlife, and the hopes science offers for delaying death (or even reversing it) in the future.
We view the work of a mortuary, examining how our remains may be dealt with. We visit a hospice, observing how a dying person's final days can be made as free as possible from pain and anxiety. We talk to those involved in legislation promoting physician-assisted suicide for those dealing with unbearable suffering. We also consider projects to preserve a body though cryopreservation, in the expectation that medical progress will, one day,   manage to bring a dead body back to life and health.
A theme running through the film is that the way in which we approach death reflects, in large measure, the way in which we dealt with the business of living.
